First Visit
Your child’s first visit to the dentist for regular care should be between the ages of 2 and 3. It can be earlier if you have any concerns. It is very important to begin instituting preventive measures before dental problems develop. During this first visit an exam will be done. Parents will also be advised on good eating habits and oral hygiene.
We offer pediatric dentistry services and will be happy to assist you and your little ones with any questions. Our goal is to help you make the right decisions regarding your child’s diet and oral hygiene to maintain healthy, cavity-free teeth for your child.
Baby Teeth
Baby teeth start erupting at about six to eight months and continue until all twenty have erupted around the age of 30 months. Permanent teeth start to present at about six years old and all baby teeth have usually fallen out by the age of thirteen. Baby teeth perform a vital function and are important to keep healthy.
General Care
We strongly recommend regular preventative visits to detect cavities and to reinforce good dietary and hygiene habits. This is also an opportunity to provide topical fluoride and assess the need for pit and fissure sealants and Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF).
Orthodontic Evaluation
Crowding, over/under bites, late pacifier use, thumbsucking habits, etc. can impact a developing child’s bite. We routinely monitor the need and timing for possible corrective measures.
Conscious sedation (nitrous oxide)
We offer Nitrous Oxide, better known as laughing gas, for both children and adults as a local sedation method. It has a high margin of safety and is administered through a small mask fitted over the nose. Its effects are experienced fairly rapidly, within 2-3 minutes, and also wear off shortly after it is turned off. Patients are awake and completely responsive during its administration and are fully recovered after the procedure. The following may be indications for its use:
- Mild to moderate anxiety in children and some adults
- Some children may not require freezing for fillings
- Special needs patients
- Patients with severe gag reflex
